Meet our Japanese Gosu Mino-Yaki Ceramic Coffee Mug, handcrafted by ceramist Kudo Kou who works for the family business, Minamigama. Located in the eastern part of Toki City, Gifu prefecture, in the mountain town of Dachi, Minamigama is a major production center of Mino ware (美濃焼; Mino-yaki).
Kudo was born in Dachi, Toki-City, Gifu Prefecture in 1966 and graduated from the Tajimi City Ceramic Design Insitute in 1991. At Minamigama, he studied under his father Rikuo Kudo. He is certified as a traditional Mino ware craftsman in 2005.
Gosu is paints mainly made from cobalt oxides, which is used for painting in blue & white (Sometsuke). The cobalt oxides that came from West Asia down to China through the Silk Road used to be originally utilized around Persia to color bowls themselves in blue. In the past, blue was said to be the magnificent color of Mother Nature such as sky and ocean.
