Japanese Hana Akae Hand-Painted Floral Cup
Handcrafted in Seto, Japan, this charming cup by Kōbō Yuzuriha brings together the warmth of traditional pottery and the delicate expression of hand-painted decoration.
The softly flared form is dressed in a creamy white slip (化粧土, keshōdo), creating a gentle canvas for flowing vines, scattered blossoms, and small touches of turquoise. Painted in the spirit of Hana Akae (花赤絵), or “floral red painting,” the warm iron-red lines move freely across the surface, lending the piece a light and playful rhythm. A deep reddish-brown band around the foot provides a quiet contrast to the delicate floral pattern.
Established in 1993 by five women artisans, Kōbō Yuzuriha is known for its expressive hand-painted ceramics. The studio takes its name from the yuzuriha tree, a Japanese symbol of renewal and continuity, whose older leaves make way for new growth.
Subtle variations in brushwork, glaze, and form give each cup its own character, reflecting the human touch behind its making.
A vessel designed to bring warmth and a sense of occasion to everyday moments.

About Kōbō Yuzuriha: Established in 1993 in Seto, Japan, Kōbō Yuzuriha is a distinctive kiln founded by five women artisans and known for its richly expressive, hand-painted ceramics. Today, the kiln continues to be shaped by the skilled hands of women makers and painters.
Each piece begins with warm Seto clay, dressed in a soft white slip (化粧土) before intricate florals are painted by hand. Layers of color, delicate brushwork, and subtle variations give every vessel a character of its own.
The name Yuzuriha comes from an evergreen whose older leaves give way as new ones emerge—a Japanese symbol of renewal, continuity, and passing something cherished from one generation to the next.
