Meet our Japanese Handmade Kotodo Oak Veneer Tin Plated Steel Tea Canisters, handcrafted in Japan. Founded in 1910 by Chuzo Takahashi, Kotodo still produces its tea canisters in the same traditional technology that has been passed down for 113 years, that which cannot be replicated by mass-production, which is evident in the details. From the time when Chuzo Takahashi, the founder, started making cans one by one, to the current Noriko Watanabe, the fifth generation, Kotodo's meticulous craftsmanship has not changed.

While the majority of canister manufacturers no longer produce their products by hand, Kotodo has maintained its traditional manufacturing process through its history. Each process has been mastered by generations of craftsmen that continue to be the foundation of Kotodo today.

Each canister is handmade by skilled craftsmen using lead-free, food grade steel and tin.

Japan is a humid country, so the quintessential features of tea canister, namely the inner lid and the tight overlap between the body and the outer lid, were developed in order to protect delicate tea leaves from moisture. This structure ensures the airtightness of the canister and its cylindrical shape prevents any moisture from accumulating in the corners. The canister opens with satisfying smoothness when you simply lift the lid straight up—no twisting or prying is required. When twisting (counter-clockwise) the cover to close, the cover snaps into place with an audible "click" sound to indicate the perfect alignment of the cover and body grain.

It is a product in which a thinly sliced natural wood sheet is hand-wrapped on a tin can. Such design allows airtightness of tin cans, while allowing the tactile experience of warm wood surface. Because real natural wood is used, the color and grain of the wood may vary.

The KOTODO signature is embossed on the bottom of every canister.

Care instruction:

Before using or cleaning the canisters, gently wipe the surface with a cloth tightly wrung out of water, followed by dry cloth. Make sure to dry out the surface completely. Do not hand wash. Not recommended for dishwasher, microwave, or oven use. This product is made of tin-plated steel, and is not suitable for storing liquid.
