Meet our Japanese Kohiki Ceramic Tea/Sake Mini Cup, handcrafted around Akazucho in the eastern part of the city of Seto, Aichi prefecturen, Japan, at one of Japan's six ancient kilns. With the history that goes back more than 700 years, this Akatsu-yaki (Akatsu-ware) was made by craftsman Togama Shuso. In 1987, Akatsu-yaki was designated by the Minister of Internationlal Trade and Industry as a traditional craft.

Kohiki typically refers to an iron-rich clay body covered over with white slip and then a transluscent glaze. In Japan, the Kohiki style started with Korean potters and appealed greatly to the busho chajin or warrior-tea men of the late 1500s.

The crackle-glazed effect makes this a unique vessel for drinking sake or tea. The beauty of the crackled Kohiki piece is that with every use, water and stain will gently seep between the layers of the crackled glaze - Kan-nyu (Kan-nyu/crackle: The cracking that appears on the surface of glazed ceramics as a result of the differing rates of expansion and contraction between base and glaze during firing. Crackle is regarded as an important factor in appreciating the aesthetic quality of such ceramic works.)

As such, the cup is full of potential to transform into your personal treasure for lifetime.

Due to the handmade nature, each piece has unique character and varies in size, colour and texture.

Each cup comes packaged beautifully in a branded wooden box, thus even perfect for gifting.
