Meet our Japanese Ontayaki Ceramic Lidded Jar, handcrafted in Sarayama, Hita, Oita Prefecture, Japan. These jars are perfect for storing tea leaves, matcha or salt. They were fired in a traditional climbing kiln called Ontayaki Kyodo Kiln, jointly operated by five master craftsmen.
Onta-yaki, a practical ware made for daily use, found wide popularity after Soetsu Yanagi, the founder of Japan’s mingei movement and popularizer of anonymous craftsmanship, recognized it in 1931 for its practicality and simple yet beautiful design. Onta is a tight-knit, collective community, where every craftman works towards the greater good of their community. Potters' names never appear on a finished item. And, in order to ensure future mutual prosperity, each family, all of which go back generations, may train only one successor and are restricted to a maximum of two wheels for throwing pottery.
