Meet our Japanese Shigaraki Ceramic Guinomi Sake Cup, handcrafted in Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. This handmade guinomi comes with an uneven, highly textured surface and thus, adds a tactile and visual dimension to the pleasure of drinking sake. The cup was "kiln-changed", intentionally "over-fired" to draw out the iron oxide in the clay and the glaze. In glazes with iron oxide, color tones from light yellow to dark brown occur in the oxidized firing atmosphere.
Located in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Shigaraki is one of Japan's six old kilns, with a history that goes back 1260 years. In 1976, Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware) was designated as a traditional craft in Japan.
