Meet our Japanese Tokoname Ceramic Flat Kyusu Tea Pot, Beige, handcrafted by craftsman Umehara Hirotake in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, the historic center of kyusu production. Hirotake was in 1946 in Tokoname, Aichi as the first son of Umehara Kiyotaka (1st Gyokko). He succeeded as the 2nd generation Gyokko and Gyokko Touen Kiln in 1988. He started Anagama (a traditional kiln) in 1997. He received many prizes and became METI-designated traditional craftsman. 

Tokoname ware has a history of 1000 years, producint unglazed earthware durin ghte ned of the Heian period and is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan. Tokoname ware includes everyday utensils such as yama chawan, lipped bowls, pots and Jars, and since the later half of the Edo period, tea utensils.

Each kyusu is handmade by craftsmen, from the molding of the body, lid, spout, tea strainer, and handle to the final firing process. The tea strainer is made of fine mesh ceramic that has no metallic smell and brings out the aroma and flavor of the tea to the fullest. The more you use the teapot, the deeper its color and luster will get over time, making it even more charming. It comes packaged in a beautiful box, thus perfect for gifting. Below the handle is engraved potter's mark.
