Meet our Japanese Yomitanyama Ceramic Plate, handcrafted Kyoji Matsuda of Kitagama in Yomitan, Okinawa Prefecture. Okinawan pottery has a solid, rustic feel. This plate was fired in a traditional climbing kiln, nobori kama, called Yomitan North Kiln that is fired only 4 times annually. The kiln is jointly operated by four master craftsmen. The flat plates, makai, and bowls of this kiln have a ring in the center of the plate, which is characteristic of pottery fired in climbing kilns called janome. Since this product is fired in a climbing kiln, it is characterized by its unevenness and distortion compared to ones fired in electric kilns.
